Getting a visa for Afghanistan used to be surprisingly easy, however now the situation is constantly changing.
Most Afghan Embassies and Consulates around the world are still controlled by the previous government, and therefore do not wish to support the new Taliban government. This means they won’t issue visas anymore. Likewise, as of August 2024, the Taliban government are no longer recognising visas issued by the following embassies or consulates: Rome, London, Brussels, Berlin, Bonn, Geneve, Paris, Vienna, Athens, Warsaw, Stockholm, Oslo, Canberra and Ottowa .
Some diplomatic missions are controlled by the previous government but are issuing visas, while a very small number are now controlled by the Taliban and it’s back to business as usual. Well, sort of. These missions that are controlled by the previous government may issue visas, but it is unlikely they will now be accepted by the current regime.
The new government isn’t particularly sure how they want to deal with foreigners and therefore the requirements for getting a tourist visa for Afghanistan are a moving target.
Most recent reports suggest the easiest places to get a visa for Afghanistan are still Dubai and Islamabad. Both of these diplomatic missions will issue a visa the same day for an express fee. And most importantly are honoured by the current Taliban government.
The documentation needed at the very least is a Letter of Invitation from a local inviting party, most commonly a tour company. You'll also need a photocopy of your passport and a photo of yourself.
