Syria has been through a lot in the last couple of generations. For almost a decade, beginning in 2011, they were completely closed off to tourism during a brutal, seemingly-endless, and incredibly intense civil war. Beginning to stagnate around 2017, tourism was able to slowly (and with plenty of restrictions) resume under the relatively stable Assad regime, with Bashar al Assad, the son of Hafez, now in power.
We've been running tours to Syria since 2017 and have now seen many phases in the country's history, with some dramatic changes taking place during 2024 and early in 2025. 2024 saw even more disruption than usual in surrounding countries, with Israel and Lebanon featuring heavily in world news and becoming incredibly unstable. For a time, Syria was still stable and tourism wasn't directly affected, however using Amman (Jordan) as a launching pad instead of Beirut (Lebanon) made things much easier.
And then in late 2024, the Syrian Army (fighting for the Assad government) was quickly and dramatically, almost overnight, overthrown. This of course led to weeks of chaos and disarray (much of which was positive though), and a total change in many aspects of life. And tourism under the new government is possibly even better than it was before!
We still see all our favourite spots, including such places as Palmyra, Krak des Chevalier and Aleppo, as well as there are some places that were too dangerous to visit before that are now back to being safe for us to go to, including Idlib.
If our group tour dates don't work for you, we also organise customised independent tours to Syria, so why not get in touch!
