Can I use ATMs/ Are card accepted?

In short yes, however, cash withdrawals only work at very few ATMs. The most common to use is Standard Charter. For card payments this is more widely available, however only at more upmarket places, for example hotels or bigger restaurants. Most places we go to on any Pakistan tour won’t be able to accept card payment.

Cash is definitely king in Pakistan, so it is advised to have it on you at all times just in case.

Is it safe?

There has been a lot of media attention recently on Pakistan regarding security, however overall, it is still safe for travellers. For women it is advised to dress modestly and not to travel alone at night time or to walk streets alone at night. During the day however it is fine.

Is it legal to drink alcohol?

While Pakistan is a dry country it is legal to buy and drink alcohol from large foreign hotel chains such as the Marriot and also international clubs which exist in most large cities, however they are discreet and hard to find. These are also only available to non-Muslim foreigners, and you may be asked to show a foreign passport to gain entry to such places.

Can I cross the land border from India?

Yes! If you find yourself in Amritsar, India, and want to cross over the Wagha border to Lahore, you can cross the border on foot as long as you already have the Pakistani e-visa. You will even get to walk on the same road that the parade takes place. This in itself would be a very cool experience!

At the moment you cannot cross back into India with the Indian e-visa, but if you have an Indian physical visa or multi entry visa then it’s ok.
