The names are all familiar from the news, place names like Kabul, Mazar e Sharif, Herat, Kandahar, Helmund, Panjshir and Bamiyan, yet all we know about them are the military exploits and stories of Taliban insurgency and eventual conquest.
Travelling to Afghanistan is also one of those rare experiences left in this globalised world where one feels like they've travelled to a truly foreign land, a destination where a few things are recognisable but then the rest are completely exotic. Beginning in Kabul, we'll venture up to Bamiyan and Band e Amir, for the natural beauty, village life and of course the place of the famous former Buddhas. We'll also explore Mazar i Sharif and Samangan, before heading back to Kabul.
