The short-lived days of the Libyan visa on arrival don’t seem to be coming back anytime soon, however, this doesn’t mean Libya is once again shut off completely to tourism. Libyan embassies are now issuing tourist visas.
Some of the embassies had recently paused this service due to the flooding that caused havoc in the east of the country. We have been informed that this pause is coming to an end and visas will be issued soon!
Is there a catch? Well yes. This won’t be available to everyone. To be able to apply you must have a Libyan embassy in your country. If you are a foreigner living overseas then you must have resident status in the country in which your applying.
So who can apply? Well luckily for Europeans there are many Libyan embassies throughout Europe. The countries with embassies are:
Albania, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey.
This is also available to citizens of the UK and the USA in the embassies of London and Washington DC.
One thing that must be pointed out is that some embassies may be more responsive than others. In our experience the USA and UK embassies are very responsive and easy to deal with, if you have the appropriate documents.
To be able to apply you will need the following:
- Passport with at least 2 blank pages that is valid for at least 6 months;
- Visa approval number (we will provide this for you)
- Bank statement (they may ask you not 100% guaranteed)
- Visa fee (cash only)
- Two recent passport photos
- Travel insurance; and
- Your residence permit if you are residing in a country different to the passport you are holding.
This information is up-to-date as of 11 October 2023. If there are any changes we will be keeping you all in the loop!
The best and easiest way to come to Libya will be to join our group tour taking place in February for Revolution Day!
