Mauritania and Algeria Winter Combo Tour
Mauritania and Algeria Winter Combo Tour
TOUR OVERVIEW
This journey through the Sahara starts in a capital unlike any you've ever seen - Nouakchott, Mauritania. We'll hit the ground running with some exciting desert driving as we leave the city and head to the lush oasis of Tergit, where we'll stay the night in traditional tents. We'll then explore the ancient library city of Chinguetti, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in the evening we'll watch the sunset from a massive sand dune before we enjoy some live traditional music and dancing. Next, it's what many people have come to Mauritania for - an epic journey across the Sahara on the iron ore train. We'll disembark in Nouadhibou, and after some much needed rest and showering, explore Mauritania's second-largest city. Upon returning to Nouakchott, we'll see some of the colourful highlights of Mauritania's sandy capital city, before taking the late night flight to Algiers.
Arriving in Algiers, we'll immediately notice a stark contrast from Mauritania in this modern and bustling capital. We'll see beautiful French and Ottoman inspired streets, massive modern architecture, and a distinct lack of the sand that permeated the Mauritania portion of this adventure. We'll then head east to the stunning city of Constantine, famed for its hanging bridges and cliffside views. From there, we'll visit the sprawling Roman ruins of Timgad, an incredibly well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the best examples of Roman urban planning on a grid system. One of the highlights will be heading back into the Sahara as we visit the southern city of Djanet and Tassili n'Ajjer National Park. We will see jaw-droppingly beautiful rock formations and extremely impressive prehistoric rock art, as well as learn about the Tuareg side of Algeria. Flying back to the north of Africa's largest country, we'll explore another Roman ruins site and eat at our favorite seafood restaurant in the world - both of which are right on the Meditteranean.
