Beer in Rwanda

Beer in Rwanda has ancient roots in traditional fermented beverages long before colonial times. Two of the most important indigenous beers are Urwagwa, a banana beer, and Ikigage, a sorghum beer. Urwagwa is made by fermenting mashed bananas and is closely tied to social rituals, ceremonies, and local identity.

Ikigage is brewed from sorghum, using malting, fermentation stages, often for home or community rather than commercial consumption.

European‐style brewing was introduced during the colonial period and more formally in the mid‐20th century. The major brewery, Bralirwa, was founded in 1957 in Gisenyi, and in 1959 began producing Primus, a lager beer under European brewing models. in 1987, another “premium” European‐style beer, Mützig, was introduced.

In recent years there has been some blending of these traditions. Local craft breweries are experimenting with using sorghum, bananas, honey, and other indigenous ingredients within newer brewing frameworks, marrying the traditional flavours and social values with modern equipment and quality control.

Rwanda's beer industry is predominantly shaped by Bralirwa Plc, a subsidiary of Heineken, which commands an estimated 55% of the commercial beer market in the country. This dominance is evident in the popularity of its flagship brands: Primus and Mützig.

1. Primus

Often referred to as the "national beer," Primus is deeply ingrained in Rwandan social life. Its affordability and consistent quality make it a staple in both urban and rural settings.

As Rwanda's most consumed beer, Primus holds a significant share of the market. When travelling around the country of a thousand hills, you’ll struggle to avoid billboards, corflutes and shop advertising featuring Primus beer.

  • Style : Pale Lager
  • ABV : 5%
  • Flavour Profile : Light, crisp, and mildly bitter with a clean malt backbone. On the bitter side.

2. Mützig

Positioned as a premium beer, Mützig is often associated with success and celebration. Its distinctive packaging and full-bodied taste appeal to consumers seeking a more refined beer experience.

Mützig is the most popular beer after Primus, with some surveys indicating it ahead by a slight margin.

  • Style : Pale Lager
  • ABV : 5.5%
  • Flavour Profile : Rich malt flavour with a balanced hop bitterness. Sweeter than Primus with slightly caramel undertones.

3. Turbo King

This is the beer for those who want some extra kick from their beer, from students, beer connoisseurs to homeless people. Turbo King is marketed as a symbol of masculinity and strength, often associated with hard work and resilience. It is popular among the working-class demographic, particularly those aged 25-30.

Turbo King is the leading brand in the Rwandan dark beer segment and the third strategic brand in Bralirwa's portfolio.

  • Style : Dark Ale
  • ABV : 6.5%
  • Flavour Profile : Tastes like spirits have been added to a lower alcohol beer. I suppose that’s where the Turbo come in.  Quite sweet with slight caramel notes.

4. Skol

Skol has been gaining popularity in Rwanda, offering an alternative to the dominant brands.

Produced by Skol Brewery Ltd, Skol is recognized for its quality and consistency. It appeals to a broad demographic, including urban professionals and expatriates.

  • Style : Pale Lager
  • ABV : 5%
  • Flavour Profile : Smooth and refreshing with a subtle hop bitterness.

5. Amstel

As is often the case, foreign labels convince a local population that it is a quality product. Amstel is one of the more simple, bland Dutch beers, and it’s no different here.

Amstel is often chosen for special occasions and gatherings, appealing to consumers wishing to show that they can pay slightly more for a less enjoyable drinking experience.

  • Style : Pale Lager
  • ABV : 4.2%
  • Flavour Profile : Watery, light bodies, flavourless.

6. Virunga Beer

A new kid on the block, Virunga Beer has created a unique range inspired by the colours and flavours of Rwanda. Virunga Mist, Gold, and Silver are premium beers produced by SKOL Brewery.

  • Style : Various
  • ABV : 5% - 6.5%
  • Flavor Profile : Virunga offers a range of flavours, including dark aromatic, medium sweet, and crisp malt.

7. Gatanu

Gatanu is the first Rwandan-named beer, crafted by Rwandan brewers to offer exceptional value and quality.

Gatanu positions itself at the lower end of the market appealing to a broad base.

  • Style : Pale Lager
  • ABV : 5.1%
  • Flavour Profile : Smooth and grainy with a soft and smooth body.

8. Urwagwa (Banana Beer)

Urwagwa is a traditional Rwandan beer made from fermented bananas. It plays a significant role in Rwandan culture, often served during weddings, celebrations, and community events.

  • Style : Traditional Fermented Beverage
  • ABV : Varies
  • Flavour Profile : Sweet and fruity with a slightly sour finish.

9. Ikigage (Sorghum Beer)

Ikigage is a traditional Rwandan beer made from fermented sorghum. It holds cultural significance and is often brewed and consumed in rural areas, reflecting Rwanda's agricultural heritage.

  • Style : Traditional Fermented Beverage
  • ABV : Varies
  • Flavor Profile : Earthy and robust with a slightly sour taste.
