As Socotra is a part of Yemen, its official currency is the same as the mainland, which is the Yemeni Rial. However, on the island the preferred currency is actually USD, so be sure to bring enough cash with you for personal expenses. United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) is also widely accepted. Because the Rial is not a very stable currency, locals much prefer to deal in USD.

Are there ATMs in Socotra?
Cash is king in Socotra and you will need to be prepared. There are no ATMs available on the island, so you must bring enough cash with you for your trip. Additionally, businesses and vendors do not accept credit cards. You will need to have either USD or AED cash. If you want to get Yemeni Rials, you can do this at a bank or currency exchange in Hadibu or Qalansiyah.
Are Euros accepted?
Euros are sometimes accepted in Socotra, however US Dollars are preferred. You will get a better rate for US Dollars over Euros if you are exchanging money, and many vendors will only accept USD.
How much cash should I take with me?
For determining how much cash you’ll need for a Socotra trip, first check if your tour includes meals. If you are on a SAIGA Socotra tour, your meals will be included. For additional drinks and snacks and small souvenirs, you should budget $5-$10 USD per day. If you would like to tip guides and drivers, be sure to bring some smaller notes with you. If you plan to go diving, expect to pay around $150-$250.
