Are you travelling to the Polygon, otherwise known as the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site? If the answer is yes, then you’re in for an amazing adventure. However, it’s not every day you travel to a Nuclear Test Site, so you’re probably thinking what does one pack for such a trip. Luckily we have you covered.
Radiation Safety Gear
Pack disposable coveralls or a protective suit if you plan to explore restricted or contaminated zones, and gloves for handling anything. A mask or respirator with HEPA filters is advisable in dusty or windy conditions to avoid inhaling radioactive dust.
Dosimeter
Bring at least a dosimeter or radiation detector (preferably a professional-grade device) to monitor radiation levels and accumulated exposure during your visit.
Clothing
Wear comfortable, lightweight and breathable clothing. It can be hot in the Kazakhstan steppe, especially when you’ve also got protective clothing on. Pack a hat and sunglasses. In winter it is normally below freezing, so make sure you’re prepared for extreme cold if that’s when you’re travelling.
Documentation & Identification
Carry your permit, identification, and travel documents, especially if visiting restricted zones.
Food & Drinks
Once you leave Kurchatov, there is nowhere to purchase anything to eat or drink. Exploring the Polygon is also a long day, so make sure you pack your lunch, snacks, drinks and water to keep you going through the day.
