There is no official flag of Socotra, however there was a flag used until 1967 called under the banner of the Mahri Sultanate. The Mahri Sultanate was a small patch of land in south Yemen which became part of Southern Yemen in 1967.
The red, white and green symbolise the pan-Arab colours and the black crescent moon and star in the centre represent Islam.
Socotra is considered to be a part of the Republic of Yemen, and so it is likely that you will see Yemeni flags while visiting. The colours of the flag are red, representing the blood of the martyrs, white, representing a bright future and black, representing the dark past.
In 2025, Hadramout was taken control of by the Southern Transitional Council (STC) and has since begun using the old flag of Southern Yemen. Due to Socotra’s proximity both politically and geographically to Southern Yemen, you may see some of these flags around.
The flag is very similar to the Republic of Yemen, however it has an added blue triangle and red star representing the ruling communist party that used to control South Yemen until its integration to the Republic of Yemen.
