We are of the strong opinion that food is one of the best things you can experience during travel. The strong connection that smell and taste have on your brain will leave you with strong memories on your trip, sometimes good, sometimes not so..
Africa is a hugely diverse in terms of people, languages, climates and so of course the food is also extremely diverse too! Here are some of the dishes we have had that you probably haven’t heard of and that you should definitely try when visiting these countries.
1. Chacouya – Côte D’Ivoire
If you ever find yourself in Adbijdan, then you absolutely need to go and get yourself some local chacouya. Chacouya is a local style bbq, which can be chicken, porn or fish although chicken and fish are most common. The marinade, spices, and the spicy sauce that come with this are absolutely to die for and will have you licking you pail oil stained fingers for days! Chacouya is often served with a side of attieke which is dried shredded casava which is similar to rice in consistency. We recommend eating this with your hands and with a big ice cold beer to get the full experience!
2. Shrimp and cheese fried bourek – Algeria
Algerian food is seriously underrated on the international culinary scene and one of the things that we always crave everytime we are heading back to run of our Algeria group tours are the shrimp and cheese bourek. Imagine a fried spring roll filled with gooey cheese and fresh caught shrimp topped off with a squirt of lemon. Even just writing this is making me salivate.
3. Kankan BBQ – Cameroon
Ok, so there is a lot of bbq in Africa and Cameroon is definitely no exception. Bbq in Cameroon is serious business and can be found basically everywhere throughout the streets of major population centres. The bbq is fresh and tasty and it is served with an amazing spice powder made from chilli, ginger, roasted peanuts, garlic and onion powder, this is known as kankan . If you find yourself in Douala or Yaoundé you must try bbq with kankan. We will definitely be eating a lot on our next Cameroon tour.
4. Koushary – Egypt
While fairly common and well known in the Middle East, Koushary is Egpyt’s answer to comfort food. Imagine, pasta, rice, fried onions all brought together with a tomato sauce. It’s a carb overload, but has amazing flavours from the onions and the tartness of the tomato. This is often served as a quick bite to eat on the streets of Cairo and is definitely worth a try!
5. Yassa poulet – Senegal
Senegal is famous for food in West Africa and you may have heard of their most famous dish, jollof rice (known as Thieboudienne in Senegal), however there are so many other foods you will have to try there. One of them that stands out is yassa poulet. This is a simple stewed chicken dish served with rice, but oh boy! That flavour is incredible! With a mixture of lemon, mustard and onions all braised together you’ll be booking a flight to Dakar in no time!
6. Braaibroodjie – South Africa
Ok so this one might not seem that out there as it is basically a grilled cheese sandwich, but hear us out. A braaibroodjie is a very simple sandwich made with cheese, chutney and other fillings of your liking which is then grilled on a braai (South African-style barbecue grill). If you’ve had a few drinks and some good grilled meat a braaibroodjie goes down an absolute treat!
