The official language of Benin and language of the government is French, however there are many indigenous languages that are considered national languages. In the southern region the languages of Fon (a Gbe language) and Yoruba are common. In the northern region there are more than half a dozen regionally important languages such as Bariba and Fulfude. Hausa speaking peoples and languages are also common in the northern border regions, especially amongst herders.
