Is it Safe?
This is the big question that everyone asks when travelling to Yemen. Socotra is very different and very separate from the mainland and therefore is much safer. Because of how far it is from mainland Yemen, it has been unaffected by the conflict and is much safer than the mainland. Socotra is a safe travel destination. Despite being part of the country of Yemen, it really is a very separate entity in just about every way.
Do I need a visa?
Yes, everyone travelling to Yemen and Socotra will need a visa. This can be organised by the tour company you travel with. The cost of the visa is $150 per person.
Can I travel independently?
No, to visit Socotra and mainland Yemen, you must be on a guided tour.
How to get there?
There are two weekly charter flights from Abu Dhabi that fly on Tuesday and Friday. During January there are also flights on Sunday, however these are irregular.
There are also flights on Yemenia airways from Cairo via Aden, however this requires a different type of visa for an additional $200. During the stopover, you are not allowed to leave the airport.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Socotra is between October and May. From the end of May till October the island is blasted by strong monsoon winds, which makes flights difficult and life on the island basically comes to a halt. It’s not impossible to visit during this time, but the chance of having issues is very high.
What is so special about Socotra?
Socotra has some of the most unique plants on the planet and they are only found here! In addition to this, it has all kinds of fantastic natural landscapes and some of the best untouched snorkelling and coral reefs on the planet. In many places Socotra feels like walking on an alien world.
Do you have to camp?
While nearly all tours do include an element of camping as this is the best way to see the island, you do not have to camp on Socotra. In fact, our tours include a mix of camping and hotels so you can freshen up after jumping in the salty crystal-clear Indian Ocean, and get the best of both worlds.
Is there internet?
Yes, there is internet on Socotra with some people using Starlink to gain access even in remote areas. Internet signal will only be accessible in the main towns on the island however, and outside of these areas, you will be very off grid and likely won’t have any signal. Instead, you’ll have to disconnect and enjoy mother nature at her finest.
