Food and Drink Socotra (Yemen)

Food in Yemen in general is absolutely fantastic. There’s a reason that there are Yemeni restaurants all over the rest of the Middle East and Africa. Socotra however, being so remote, has more limited options, however that doesn’t mean the options that are available won’t be delicious.

Common food items are things like grilled fish with rice or flat bread (Yemeni-style bread is one of the best in the Middle East in our opinion).

Grilled or stewed mutton and goat is also common especially around the population centres.

For vegetarians, markets in the towns will have fresh vegetables and eggs. Eggs are commonly served with breakfast and lunch and are very commonly used in Yemeni cuisine.

For seafood lovers, Socotra will be a paradise.

Alcohol is banned in Yemen, however foreigners are allowed to bring up to two litres of alcohol with them to Socotra.
