Getting a Visa for Venezuela

If you are a citizen of one of the 82 visa-exempt countries, you can enter Venezuela for up to 90 days without a visa, provided you meet the normal passport validity requirements. For all other nationalities, a visa must be secured before travel, with detailed application procedures available at Venezuelan diplomatic missions. Always verify the latest requirements, as visa policies can change quickly due to diplomatic or security developments.

Countries Requiring a Visa

All other passports including the United States, Canada, Singapore, most of Africa and several other South American countries must secure a visa before entering Venezuela. Visas are not available on arrival or through online applications; they must be obtained at Venezuelan consulates abroad. The process involves submitting a completed visa application form, a valid passport with at least six months validity, recent passport-sized photographs, proof of travel arrangements (round-trip tickets or onward bookings), proof of sufficient funds for the stay, and sometimes an invitation letter or proof of accommodation.

Special Regulations for Americans

U.S. citizens are currently faced with significant restrictions. Even with a visa, entry is subject to border policies that can change rapidly. U.S. citizens cannot apply for a Venezuelan visa within the United States due to the closure of the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, D.C., and other consular offices. Instead, they must approach Venezuelan consulates in Mexico City, Panama City, or Managua for visa issuance. The process involves submitting the required documentation remotely, often through a courier, with the applicant expected to travel in person at a later stage to receive the visa stamp in their passport. The entire procedure typically takes between four and six weeks.

Additional Considerations

  • Transit travellers require a transit visa.

  • The yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory if arriving from endemic zones.
