Our Nigeria tours focus on the Yoruba heartland in the country's south-west, where the history and culture are richest and the travelling easiest. We start in Lagos, Africa's biggest and most chaotic city, before heading out to Makoko, the extraordinary floating village built on stilts over the lagoon.
From there we visit Abeokuta and Olumo Rock, a huge granite outcrop that once sheltered the Yoruba during 19th-century tribal wars, before continuing to Ife-Ife — the spiritual capital of the Yoruba people and, according to tradition, the birthplace of mankind. A highlight of the trip is the Sacred Grove of Osun in Osogbo, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed forest sanctuary dedicated to the Yoruba goddess of fertility. We finish back near Lagos with a walk through the Lekki Conservation Centre's canopy walkway before our final night in the city.
Nigeria also forms part of our combined West Africa tour alongside Benin and Togo, for travellers who want to see all three countries — and their shared Voodoo Coast history — on one trip. If our group tour dates don't work for you, we can also arrange a private tour for you.
