Nigeria is often called the "Giant of Africa" — and not just for its size. With more than 230 million people, it's the most populous country on the continent and one of the most populous in the world, home to over 250 ethnic groups and a similar number of languages. It's a country of huge contrasts: the sprawling energy of Lagos, Africa's largest city, sits alongside quieter towns still shaped by centuries-old kingdoms and traditions.

Nigeria's cultural weight is hard to overstate. This is the heartland of Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa culture, the birthplace of Afrobeats and Nollywood, and home to some of West Africa's most significant historical sites, from the sacred groves of Osun-Osogbo to the ancient city of Ife-Ife, regarded by the Yoruba as the birthplace of humanity itself.

Nigeria doesn't get anywhere near the tourist numbers its history and culture deserve, largely thanks to its reputation — much of which relates to areas well outside the routes we travel. Stick to the south-west and you'll find a country that's welcoming, endlessly colourful, and incredibly fun with the people that have one of the best senses of humour in the world!

This is your chance to experience the real Nigeria: floating villages, UNESCO-listed sacred forests, royal history, and some of the warmest hospitality anywhere in West Africa.
