Turkmenistan might often be thought of for its gleaming marble capital, Ashgabat, but just a few hours’ travel to the east lies one of the greatest historical treasures of Central Asia: the ancient city of Merv, near the modern city of Mary. Once one of the most important cities on the Silk Road — and at certain points possibly the largest city in the world, Merv’s ruins are a stunning testament to thousands of years of human civilization. A day trip from Ashgabat to Mary and Merv is common requirement for any trip to Turkmenistan, so here’s a practical guide to how it happens.

Why Make the Journey?

At first glance, the idea of visiting a desert ruin deep inland from the capital might sound daunting — but the reward is huge, especially for those with a deep love of ancient history. Merv is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where layered urban centres span Bronze Age beginnings to medieval Islamic empires.

Meanwhile, Mary, the regional capital sitting just a short drive from the ruins, offers its own insights into modern Turkmenistan as well as its famous Historical Museum.

In one day, you can move from Ashgabat’s futuristic aesthetic into a landscape that captures the essence of the Silk Road, a journey back in time that makes Turkmenistan unique.

Getting There: Transport Options

Since Mary and Merv are roughly 370–400 km east of Ashgabat, your choice of transport is the main decision you will need to make.

Driving – Easiest and quickest option

For most travellers aiming to see Mary and Merv in a single day, driving is the most practical option.

Thanks to opening of the new Autobahn the trip to Merv and Mary is now a relatively quick and comfortable one. The Turkmenistan government is building the new Turkmenbashy to Turkmenabat Motorway, and the Ashgabat to Mary section has been opened. The drive from Ashgabat to Mary now takes about 3 hours each way, considerably faster than in the past and quicker than flying once you include the time before the flight you need to arrive.

Driving gives you:

  • Control over timing, so you’re not relying on train or flight schedules.
  • Opportunities for scenic stops, snacks, or quick tea breaks along the road.
  • A comfortable way to experience the wide expanses of the Karakum Desert while maximizing sightseeing time.

Your vehicle can be a private car, rented with a driver. Traffic is extremely light meaning you don’t need to factor in traffic jams, and the roads are straightforward.

Flying

Turkmenistan’s domestic flights connect Ashgabat and Mary, and air travel takes about 40 minutes.

Before the recent upgrades to road infrastructure, flying was the quickest way to do a day trip to Mary and Merv. Now this option is used for those transiting directly from an international arrival or those particularly interested in experience Turkmenistan Airlines.

  • Flights run daily with morning and afternoon options.
  • You still need transport organised in order to visit both Merv and Mary.

If you’re short on time and flights work with your schedule, this is a viable option — but for most day trippers, driving remains more reliable.

Train (Not Feasible for Day Trips)

While Turkmenistan does have train connections linking major cities, train travel is too slow and infrequent for a same-day Ashgabat–Merv round trip. There are no high-speed rail options that make the schedule workable for a single day’s sightseeing.

If you have more time and enjoy train travel, you can incorporate it into an extended trip, but for a one–day itinerary, train travel doesn’t make sense.

What to See in Merv

Once in Mary, most travellers head directly to Ancient Merv, an archaeological park of immense scale.

Ancient Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Listed)

The ruins of Merv include multiple layers of history — from Bronze Age settlements to later medieval fortresses. Highlights include:

  • Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum – A towering centrepiece built in the 12th century during the Seljuk period, this mausoleum’s grand brickwork and dome make it one of the most memorable monuments in Central Asia.
  • Erk Kala – Remains of one of the earliest fortified settlements, with walls reaching nearly 30 meters high.
  • Gyaur Kala and Kyz Kala – Ancient city fortifications from different eras that speak to Merv’s long continuity as a settlement.
  • Mosques, mausoleums, citadel ruins, and archaeological layers – Wander through mud-brick walls and open desert to find remnants of rich urban life.

You can easily spend several hours exploring the ruins.

What to See in Mary

After exploring Merv, you’ll likely have time to enjoy the city of Mary.

Mary History Museum

This state museum offers archaeological artifacts, ethnographic displays, and cultural history from the region. It provides important context for the ruins you’ve just seen. Many of the artifacts found at Merv are houses here and the museum is generally considered the best in Turkmenistan.

Gurbanguly Hajji Mosque

Named after the second President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the grand Hajji Mosque in the centre of Mary is a striking white marble building with golden domes and tall minarets, this is one of the city’s most visually impressive modern landmarks.

Mary City Centre and Central Bazaar

A stroll through Mary’s city centre lets you absorb daily life, the main local market, and small cafes, a refreshing contrast to the desert ruins.

Many visitors also enjoy seeing traditional Turkmen carpet patterns, unique local crafts, and sampling hearty Turkmen cuisine, consisting of plov, shashliks and meat filled pastries, washed down with sweet tea.
