The current flag of Togo was adopted in 1960 when they gained independence from the French. The flag consists of five horizontal stripes of green and yellow with a red square in the top left-hand corner with a white star in the middle of the square. The stripes represent hope, agriculture and the lands richness. The white star symbolises purity, love and fidelity.
From 1884 to 1914 Togo used the flag of its colonial ruler Germany as part of German Togoland. From 1916 onwards Togo came under French control and was renamed French Togo land. The flag of French Togoland was green with the French tricolour in the top left corner with two yellow stars representing the savannah in the north and southern coastal plains.
