Is Pakistan Safe to Travel?

Pakistan is another one of our destinations that is often in the media for all the wrong reasons. But just like many of the destinations we go to, the media often does exaggerate and doesn’t really tell the whole story. If we only heard the news about bad things in Europe or the USA we’d probably avoid it too, but just like the USA and Europe, Pakistan is a big place and it’s easy to avoid anything dangerous.

How Safe is Pakistan?

Pakistan, despite what you may hear in the news is very safe! If you are heading to the main tourist places such as Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Lahore the thing you will have to be most wary of is traffic or maybe some stomach issues. Crimes against tourists are few and far between, and if you use common sense then you’ll have no issues at all.

Where is dangerous?

In recent times, there have been isolated attacks mainly in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KPK) and in Karachi. None of these attached were targeted towards foreign tourists however and the attacks are very isolated events. These areas are still safe to travel (and we go to them regularly) but there are some extra steps you need to take when travelling there.

What security measures are in place for Pakistan?

If you travel to anywhere inside KPK or in Balochistan you will have to have an armed escort with you. As soon as you get to the border of either of these provinces you will be followed with some soldiers to your destination. Every time we have had this happen the soldiers are super relaxed and very friendly and kind of makes it a fun experience.

What should you avoid?

We would definitely not advise to go running around at night along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border as that’s considered a little unstable. On a tour though you’d be fine. Joking aside however, the real main thing you need to be concerned about is showing large amounts of cash in public and for ladies to not walk alone at night time in certain areas. Realistically our advice is no different to traveling around Europe. In fact, we would definitely consider the risks of robbery or other petty crimes much higher in Europe.

How can I travel to Pakistan?

The best way is of course to join us for a Saiga tour in Pakistan. We several Pakistan tours a year which line up perfectly with our Afghanistan tours and are amazing as a combo!
