Kandahar and Ghazni Extension

TOUR OVERVIEW

This is a three-day extension that can be done at the start or end of any Afghanistan tour. It begins and ends in Kabul, so it is easily accessible, and is perfect for those who want to see one of the most extreme parts of the country.

Kandahar is the second largest city in Afghanistan and was formerly the Taliban capital (the first time they were in control). Until the Taliban takeover in 2021, Kandahar was one of the most dangerous places to be in Afghanistan. Kidnappings were extremely common and the few foreigners who went there had to go in and out as quickly as possible. However, now that the Taliban is in control, Kandahar is just as safe to visit as anywhere else in Afghanistan.  That being said, it is the most conservative part of an already extremely conservative nation, and you will notice that things feel very different in this part of the country.

From Kandahar, you’ll drive back to Kabul stopping in Ghazni. Until just a few years ago, this road was extremely dangerous and was rarely travelled by tourists. Ghazni itself is perhaps most famous for its two 43m geometric minarets, which have managed to withstand nearly 10 centuries of wars, invasions, and earthquakes, though the rest of the Mosque of Bahramshah, which they were originally part of, is now gone.

We have designed this itinerary as a three-day trip, flying down to Kandahar and driving back up to Kabul. However, it is also possible to fly both ways, and those with tighter schedules should check out our two-day Kandahar Extension .
