Socotra is one of the closest places you can get to true paradise on Earth. But getting there is not as easy as booking a ticket and rocking up. Socotra is relaxing but it’s also a fantastic place for those with that adventurous spirit. Socotra is a part of Yemen, and if you watched the news at all in the past 10 years, then you probably haven’t heard many good things. From civil war to cholera to Islamic extremism, these are not exactly things that entice tourists.
Socotra however is far removed from the conflict on mainland Yemen. Apart from the odd flight disruption, Socotra is fairly insulated from the conflict and thus has remained a safe way for people to visit the country and enjoy the unique natural beauty that Socotra has on offer.
If you’re wondering about whether it is safe to visit Socotra or not, we have an existing blog on this exact topic here .

Travel to Socotra is possible for all nationalities except citizens of Israel. Further, if you have evidence of travel to Israel in your passport, you will also be denied access to the island. There are no other restrictions that would prevent you from be able to visit the island.
Where to fly from?
There are two ways to fly into Socotra.
1. The most popular way is to catch a charter flight from Abu Dhabi. This service runs twice a week from Abu Dhabi direct to Socotra and sometimes has an extra service on Sunday during extreme peak periods.

The price for this flight runs at $930 return ticket.
2. The second way and much more difficult way is to fly from Cairo with Yemenia Airways, via Aden. This way is exceptionally more difficult as you have to obtain not only a visa for Socotra but also a visa for mainland Yemen for your transit. In addition to the visa you will also be very restricted with your movements while there and most likely won’t be allowed to leave the airport. This flight usually sells for between $1100-1300 USD return.
Do I need a visa?
Yes, you do need a visa for Socotra. But no fear! We will get your information and apply for this for you. The cost is usually around $150 for a single-entry visa.
Can I independently travel to Socotra?
Yes and no. You don’t have to join a group tour to Socotra, however you do have to be with a guide on the ground. To be honest having a guide on the ground is fairly essential as they know the campsites and best spot for swimming and general exploring on the island.
This isn’t strictly independent travel as you will be with a local, but if you are trying to avoid other travellers on group trips, then this is possible.
Do I have to camp on Socotra?
No. While most tours will include an element of camping, and it is by far the best way to experience the islands remoteness, there are hotels in Hadiboh and some tourists will opt to stay there and do day trips. Saiga Socotra group tours are a mixture of camping and hotels, so you will be able to freshen up after taking numerous dips in the salty aqua waters of the Indian Ocean.
