TOUR OVERVIEW

When looking for an island holiday you probably don’t think of Yemen as a destination. However, tucked away in the Indian Ocean is one of the most spectacular coral-surrounded islands in the world. Often referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean, Socotra is famous for its amazing beaches and unique flora, such as the dragon blood trees.

This tour will start and end in Abu Dhabi, taking a charter flight to this beautiful but remote island. We will cover most of the island, camping on different beaches throughout the tour. At the start of the tour we will head to the east of the island, seeing the highlights of Arher Beach and Ras Ersal. We then head to Dihamri, one of the best snorkelling spots (probably in the world), before moving inland to marvel at the incredible dragon blood tree forests on the Dixam Plateau.

We then head to the western part of the island to see how local life is in the town of Qasaliyah, and also to see the incredibly picturesque Detwah Lagoon. Heading further west we will reach some of the most remote parts of the island with more swimming of course, and possibly even a chance to see dolphins and other marine animals. Towards the end of the tour we head back to Hadiboh where we can see how normal life is on the island. After more camping on the beach, we will finally take another charter flight back to Abu Dhabi to finish the tour.

Along the way we will make a stop to see the abandoned Soviet T-34 tanks that were put on the island during WW2. This makes for a great photo stop as the tanks are completely rusted over from the salty air. And we do love a good rusty tank!

  • Continuing past Qalansiyah we will head to the starting point of the Detwah Lagoon, which hosts snow-white sand and turquoise clear water, and where you will definitely want to take a dip. Detwah Lagoon, Socotra, Yemen

  • After enjoying the paradise of the lagoon, we will head to our lunch stop where we may have a chance to meet the famous cave man of Socotra. Made famous in a BBC article, he shows how locals once lived on the island from a beach cave. He actually lives in Qalansiyah now, but still loves to show tourists the old traditional way of life.

  • For sunset we will head to a lookout point to take in views over Detwah Lagoon. We will then return to our campsite for dinner and to relax and spend the night.
