Niger doesn't have a working e-visa system, whatever you might read elsewhere, so getting a visa sorted before you go takes a bit more legwork than some of its neighbours. Here's how it actually works in 2026: the traditional embassy route everyone has to know about, plus the easier path we can offer if you're travelling with us on a Saiga group tour.

Do I need a visa for Niger?
It depends on your nationality. Citizens of ECOWAS member states — Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo and Tunisia — can enter Niger visa-free for stays of up to 90 days. Most other nationalities, including passport holders from the US, UK, EU, Australia and Canada, need a visa arranged in advance.
What about the Niger e-visa website?
Niger does technically have an e-visa portal, run by the Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DST). In practice, though, it doesn't work — large parts of the site fail to load properly, and we're not aware of anyone who has actually managed to get a visa through it recently. We wouldn't recommend relying on it, and if you're planning your own trip, budget time for the traditional embassy process instead.
The traditional way: applying through an embassy
If you're not travelling with us, this is your route. All Niger tourist visa applications have to be submitted in person or by mail at a Niger embassy or diplomatic mission — ideally in your home country, though some missions in neighbouring countries will process applications from non-residents too. It's worth calling ahead, since policies vary by embassy.
What documents do I need?
For a standard tourist visa, you'll typically need to provide:
-
A completed and signed visa application form, usually in triplicate.
-
Three recent passport-style photos on a white background.
-
Your passport, valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay with at least one blank page (some embassies only require this at collection, not at application).
-
A confirmed return flight itinerary.
-
Proof of accommodation in Niger.
-
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate — this is compulsory.
-
Proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
Some embassies also occasionally ask for an invitation letter, particularly if you're travelling with a tour operator.
How much does it cost?
Visa fees generally sit around $155 USD for a single-entry tourist visa, though this varies a little by embassy. Payment is often only accepted as a bank draft or money order rather than cash or card, so check with your specific embassy before you go in.
How long does it take?
Processing typically takes 8 to 15 business days, though it can run longer depending on the embassy's workload. Apply well ahead of your trip — this isn't one to leave to the last minute.
The easier way: visa on arrival with a Saiga group tour
This is where travelling with us makes a real difference. If you join one of our Niger group tours, we're able to arrange a visa on arrival for you for a fee of €120, rather than sending you through the embassy process above. It's one of the main reasons people choose to see Niger with a tour operator rather than organising the paperwork independently — it cuts out the uncertainty of embassy processing times and the confusion around the broken e-visa site entirely.
Get in touch with us for the specifics of what's needed on your end before travel, but broadly, joining a group tour is currently the simplest and most reliable way to get into Niger.
Anything else to prepare?
Yellow fever vaccination is compulsory for entry regardless of which route you take, so make sure your certificate is up to date and packed with your travel documents.
Do we offer Niger tours?
Yes — Niger is one of our West Africa destinations, and one of the best examples of why travelling with a specialist operator is worth it for a country like this. Take a look at our
