We like to have a full day of activities and sight-seeing at the start of our tours because we know that a lot of travellers have limited time and/or budget, and as such as don't include an "arrival day". However, if you want/need to arrive before Day 1 of the tour we can of course help arrange extra accommodation and airport transfers.
Today we’re going to dive headfirst into the energetic chaos of Douala! Douala is the economic heartbeat of Cameroon and the country's largest city.
Your adventure begins with a sightseeing tour that will awaken all your senses. Soak in the bustling markets, the vibrant sounds of Makossa music, and the infectious energy of Cameroon's economic capital. This is your introduction to a country that never sleeps.
We’ll visit the Doual’art Museum, a contemporary art space that showcases the best of Cameroonian and African urban art.
Next we'll visit the Maritime Museum before making our way to the lively Youpwe Fish Market, where the waterfront buzzes with fishermen, traders and the incredible smells of freshly grilled seafood. Part of the fun in the market here is selecting our own fresh seafood and then taking it upstairs to be grilled. Prices are very cheap and the quality is amazing!
We'll end the evening with dinner at one of Douala's famous street BBQ spots. Today will have been the perfect introduction to Cameroonian cuisine.
Overnight in Douala.
Buckle up for a spectacular full-day drive through Cameroon's breathtaking Western Highlands, the heartland of the Bamileke people. Watch as the urban sprawl melts away into lush greenery, forested hills, towering mountains, traditional villages and terraced farmland.
We’ll stop for a delicious local lunch or BBQ pork at a very local restaurant along the way before arriving in Foumban, the spiritual and artistic capital of the Bamoun people. We'll start with the absolutely epic, indescribable, and totally unique Foumban Museum - a palace complex unlike anything else you've ever seen. It's a building literally in the shape of a giant two-headed snake, mouths open and fangs extended, with a huge spider sitting on top of it, and a twin cowbell flanking the central entrance, all of which represents the royal authority of the Bamileke king. The two open mouths are obviously entrances and exits too. And it doesn't get any less weird and cool once you're inside. And yes, of course you can go right up into the spider.
In the mid afternoon we’ll arrive at our peaceful C3 resort nestled in nature, your perfect retreat after a day of exploration. We'll have time to enjoy our surroundings, go for a little walk if you want to, use the pool and gym, or simply just sit and chill with a local beer and take it all in.
And we'll continue the fun by also spending the night here, in a real life 21st Century African Chiefdom. The accommodation itself is pretty basic, but so worth it for the experience!
We’ll leave Batoufam this morning behind as we head back towards the coast, with several memorable stops along the way.
Our first stop is the famous Ekom-Nkam Falls in the Litterol Region of Cameroon. Ekom-Nkam Falls is a spectacular waterfall that cascades through dense jungle and was famously used as a filming location for Tarzan, earning it the local nickname of the Tarzan Waterfalls. There is a short walk to the first viewing platform, with a longer trail available for those who want to get closer to the falls.
We arrive in Limbe in the late afternoon, and after checking into our hotel we can walk down to the beach where there are many stalls grilling freshly caught seafood. The area is filled with local performers such as singers and even magicians to entertain you while stretching our legs on the famous black sand beaches, formed by lava flows from nearby Mount Cameroon.
Before our return to Douala, we’ll visit the Limbe Wildlife Centre, a renowned sanctuary for rescued primates like gorillas and chimpanzees, set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Cameroon. It is a sobering and inspiring place — a chance to see these extraordinary animals up close while learning about conservation efforts in the region.
We will then visit the amazing Limbe Botanical Gardens which showcases some of the most stunning flora of the country with huge trees draped in creeper vines. Inside the gardens is also a Commonwealth War Graves site. Cameroon joined the Commonwealth in 1995 making it the first majority Francophone nation to do so. We don't say it lightly, but it's a pretty impressive botanical gardens.
We’ll then enjoy one last scenic drive along the coast, drinking in the final views of Cameroon's stunning diversity before arriving back in Douala.
The evening is free to explore the city at your own pace, or join the group for a final dinner at a popular local spot known for its BBQ meats, cheap cold Cameroonian beer and great atmosphere.
