TOUR OVERVIEW

Our tour kicks off in the busy capital of Algiers, where we'll take in all the beautiful architecture, soak in the atmosphere, visit the world's tallest minaret, and feast on tasty Algerian snacks. From here we'll head to Constantine, which is maybe the most beautiful city in all of North Africa. This city is famous for its hanging bridges, which dangle over the ravines running throughout this picturesque cliffside city. From there, we'll drive to the impressive Roman ruins of Timgad, before flying down south to Djanet.

In the south, we'll explore Tassili n'Ajjer National Park and see stunning desert rock formations, rolling waves of red and orange sand dunes, and prehistoric rock art that is thousands of years older than the pyramids. Flying back north, we'll visit another gorgeous Roman site, as well as our favorite seafood restaurant, before one last night in Algiers.

Leaving Algeria, we'll make a stop in Tunisia, with a day in the relaxed but bustling capital. We'll explore the ancient streets of the beautiful Tunis Medina. We'll also leave the city to see the ruins of Carthage, and the seaside town of Sidi Bou Said, which is often compared to Santorini for its charming blue and white buildings.

Our next stop will of course be Libya! This incredible country has so much to offer. We'll start in the capital of Tripoli where we'll take in the main sights of the city, as well as hanging out with locals at the always-busy Martyr's Square and visit countless coffee shops. We'll visit the magnificent Roman ruins of Leptis Magna and Sabratah, the former being one of the most massive Roman sites in the world, and the latter having one of the most well-preserved Roman theatres you'll ever see.

We'll also head south, stopping at many Berber sites along the way, ending in Ghadames. This extremely impressive city is both beautiful and fascinating and will be one of the highlights of the trip. We'll spend the evening watching the sunset from the Libyan Saharan sand dunes, and maybe even do some dune-bashing for those that are wanting an adreneline rush! Back in Tripoli, we'll have dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the old city before we say our final goodbyes the next morning.

Day 8Mon Apr 19
Tripoli
  • Martyrs' Square, Tripoli, Libya This morning, we will arrive in Tripoli and meet anyone who is doing the Libya Spring Tour .
  • After clearing immigration, we'll head out for a tour of Libya's capital city.
  • Our first stop will be Martyrs' Square, named in honor of the 14 Libyan resistance fighters who were hanged here during the Italian occupation. It was renamed Green Square under Gaddafi, and many more public executions would take place in this square during his time. It was one of the main rallying centres during the 2011 revolution, and took back the name Martyrs' square following the uprising. Today, it's a social hub of the city. It's a place for families to enjoy the sunshine, celebrate weddings and graduations, and it happens to have a surprisingly big rollerblading scene.
  • Right on the square is the recently reopened National Museum. Even those who aren't typically museum fans will be impressed by how spectacularly the museum has been designed and curated. Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Tripoli, Libya
  • Next we'll wander through the old souk, where we'll see architecture from the city's Ottoman past. One of the key differences between the souk in Tripoli compared to other Medinas in North Africa is the attitude of the people. No one is shouting or beckoning for you to come buy their wares. The area is often bustling, but the feeling is relaxed. As there isn't much of a tourist presence in Libya, the souk is still mostly geared towards local shoppers.
  • We'll visit the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, which is the most prominent remaining relic from the city's Roman history. This massive ancient marble arch is set in the middle of the modern shops and restaurants that have been built around it.
  • After sunset, we'll have dinner at one of our favourite restaurants in the old city, and now we'll really begin to see the city come to life.
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 9Tue Apr 20
Sabratha, Tripoli
  • Sabratha Amphitheatre, Libya In the morning, we'll head west to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sabratha. This well-preserved Roman city is set right on the Meditteranean Sea and has absolutely spectacular views throughout. The site still contains some original mosaics, baths, a stunning mausoleum, a basilica, and more, but the highlight will surely be the absolutely magnificently preserved and restored amphitheatre. Sabratha, Libya This three-story columned theatre is in incredible condition, with Bas-Reliefs and a large portion of the seating still in tact.
  • We'll spend several hours exploring this magnificent site, before returning to Tripoli in the afternoon.
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 10Wed Apr 21
Tripoli, Berber Granaries and Villages, Ghadames
  • Kabaw Berber granary, Libya Leaving Tripoli we'll make our way south towards Ghadames, spending the day stopping at Berber granaries and villages as we drive through the Nafusa mountains. Read more about the Berbers here.
  • Our first stop will be Qasr Haj, a strikingly large round granary built in the 13 th century.
  • After that we will visit a former Amazigh village built on a clifftop with epic views.
  • The third village and granary we will stop at is a bit funkier than the others. You will have the opportunity to explore by climbing up the walls or into the chambers of the granary, and can even test your strength by pushing the wheel of an old olive oil press.
  • In the evening, we will arrive in Ghadames. For dinner, we will get our first peek of the old city and have a traditional Libyan meal prepared for us at an outdoor café.
  • Overnight in Ghadames.

Day 11Thu Apr 22
Ghadames
  • Dinner in Ghadames, Libya We will spend most of the day visiting the fascinating old city of Ghadames.
  • We will explore from both above and below, in a very unique double storey maze. There's the labyrinth of covered walkways on the ground that were traditionally used by the men of the city, as well as the narrow pathways above which connect the roofs of the entire city, and were used exclusively by the women.
  • After our exploration, we'll have a traditional Libyan meal in one of the homes of the old town.
  • Leaving the city itself, we'll take 4x4s out into the desert to slide down the dunes and see the sunset over the Sahara. Tuareg sand dunes, Sahara Desert, Libya Those seeking a thrill can hop into the backseat of a local’s car for some dune bashing.
  • On our way to the dunes, we’ll stop at the ruins of an ancient Roman fortress where we can see the neighboring countries of Tunisia and Algeria. Sand dunes, ruins, and an international land border all in one spot!
  • After sunset, we'll try a local specialty of bread cooked in the sand and enjoy some peanut tea.
  • Overnight in Ghadames.

Day 12Fri Apr 23
Ghadames, Nalut, Tripoli
  • Berber granary, Nalut, Libya In the morning, we will start to make our way back to Tripoli via Nalut.
  • Along the way we will be stopping to see more incredible Berber architecture and more beautiful Saharan desert scenery. We will also be able to catch a glimpse of one of the few remaining posters from the Gaddafi era.
  • If we can, we'll make a stop at a truly unique place that you won't find on other itineraries, the Nalut Dinosaur Museum! Nalut Dinosaur Museum, Libya Yes, in this small Libyan town there is a special dinosaur museum dedicated to a nearby discovery. One of the main highlights of the museum is a 112 million year-old dinosaur claw (which you might be able to touch if you're lucky!) but it's the way the museum has been curated that we find special. Like many places in Libya, you have to call a guy to unlock it for you, so it's not a guarantee that we'll make it in, but even that in itself is part of the fun!
  • For lunch, we will have the opportunity to eat in an underground troglodyte home and enjoy a local specialty.
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 13Sat Apr 24
Leptis Magna, Tripoli
  • Leptis Magna, Libya This morning we'll drive east to Leptis Magna, where we'll be able to say that we've visited all three cities of ancient Tripolitania (Sabratha, Oya (now Tripoli), and Leptis Magna). This massive UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most impressive ancient Roman cities you can visit in the world today. Not only is the site sprawling, but the temples, arches, baths, forum, theatre, and amphiteatre themselves are gargantuan. Nightlife in Tripoli, Libya Here we will walk down ancient colonnaded streets, see impressive arches, and learn about the uniqueness of this ancient marvel. And unlike most other sites of this scale, we'll almost certainly have the entire place to ourselves.
  • Following our visit, we'll head back to Tripoli where you can have a rest, or take a walk around the city to grab any last-minute souvenirs.
  • After our final dinner, we can head to a 100 year old café in Algeria square to drink almond tea and smoke shisha with the locals. It's a great place to people watch (though of course, we'll be the main people being watched!).
