TOUR OVERVIEW

This 12-day journey cuts across the heart of the West African Sahel, taking you through three of the most fascinating and least-visited countries on the continent — Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. From the buzzing streets of Bamako to a river cruise with hippos in Niamey, this tour packs in an extraordinary range of experiences that most travellers will never get to have.

We kick things off in Mali's capital Bamako, where you'll dive headfirst into local life at the metal recycling market, browse the famous fetish market for black magic supplies and Malian souvenirs, and visit the National Museum. A day trip out to the village of Sibi takes us to stunning rock formations, the spectacular Arch of Kamandjan, and a cave once used for ancestral consultation. By night, Bamako comes alive with the live music Mali is world-famous for.

From there we fly to Ouagadougou, the energetic capital of Burkina Faso. A highlight here is Tiébélé — the royal compound of the Kassena people, famous for its intricate and colourful traditional wall paintings. We then wind our way to Bobo Dioulasso, the cultural heart of Burkina Faso. Along the way we will see some geological highlights as well as sacred crocodiles!

Our final destination is Niamey, the laid-back capital of Niger. Here we explore the markets, the artisanal village, and the striking Grand Mosque before ending the tour with a sunset cruise on the Niger River — one of the great waterways of Africa — watching hippos and fishermen go about their business as the sun goes down.
