TOUR OVERVIEW

This quick four day Libya tour is perfect for those hoping to dip their toes into one of the world's least-visited countries. We'll be there for the excitement of Revolution Day, as well as the vibrant nightlife of Ramadan. While Muslim countries are often overlooked during Ramadan, this period of time is actually when Tripoli's Old Town is most alive. After sunset, locals gather in Martyr's square to socialize and roller blade, men stay up all night at coffee shops, and restaurants are buzzing.

We'll arrive in the country's capital, Tripoli in the morning on the first day and start exploring what the city has to offer. We'll visit Martyr's Square where we'll get to see the exquisite new National Museum, which had been closed for nearly 15 years following the 2011 revolution. We'll wander the winding streets of the old souk, and maybe even find some Gaddafi-era souvenirs. The next day, we'll visit the Roman ruins of Sabratha, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highlight will surely be the 3-story, impressively preserved theatre. In the evening, it will be the moment we're all waiting for - the Revolution Day celebration! This of course marks the anniversary of the day the Revolution began that would overthrow Muamar Gaddafi and leave the country divided. We'll join the crowd gathering in Martyrs' square for the festivities, and walk around the city soaking up the excitement. The next day, we'll visit one of the most impressive Roman sites in the world, Leptis Magna. This massive Roman city gives visitors a full picture of daily life in Ancient Rome, with it's well-preserved and colossal ruins.

Itinerary
Day 1Tue Feb 16
Tripoli
  • Martyrs' Square, Tripoli, Libya This morning, you will arrive in Tripoli. After clearing immigration, we'll head out for a tour of Libya's capital city.
  • Our first stop will be Martyrs' Square, named in honor of the 14 Libyan resistance fighters who were hanged here during the Italian occupation. It was renamed Green Square under Gaddafi, and many more public executions would take place in this square during his time. It was one of the main rallying centres during the 2011 revolution, and took back the name Martyrs' square following the uprising. Today, it's a social hub of the city. It's a place for families to enjoy the sunshine, celebrate weddings and graduations, and it happens to have a surprisingly big rollerblading scene.
  • Right on the square is the recently reopened National Museum. Even those who aren't typically museum fans will be impressed by how spectacularly the museum has been designed and curated. Arch of Marcus Aurelius, Tripoli, Libya
  • Next we'll wander through the old souk, where we'll see architecture from the city's Ottoman past. One of the key differences between the souk in Tripoli compared to other Medinas in North Africa is the attitude of the people. No one is shouting or beckoning for you to come buy their wares. The area is often bustling, but the feeling is relaxed. As there isn't much of a tourist presence in Libya, the souk is still mostly geared towards local shoppers.
  • We'll visit the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, which is the most prominent remaining relic from the city's Roman history. This massive ancient marble arch is set in the middle of the modern shops and restaurants that have been built around it.
  • After sunset, we'll have dinner at one of our favourite restaurants in the old city, and now we'll really begin to see the city come to life.
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 2Wed Feb 17
Revolution Day, Sabratha, Tripoli
  • Sabratha, Libya Today is Revolution Day! The main festivities will take place in the evening, but we’ll see people celebrating throughout the day.
  • In the morning, we'll head west to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sabratha. This well-preserved Roman city is set right on the Meditteranean Sea. The site still contains some original mosaics, baths, a stunning mausoleum, a basilica, and more, but the highlight will surely be the theatre. This three-story columned theatre is in incredible condition, with Bas-Reliefs and a large portion of the seating still in tact.
  • And since it's Revolution Day, we might even have the rare opportunity to catch a celebratory local performance at the ampitheatre. Revolution Day, Tripoli, Libya
  • After our visit we'll head back to Tripoli for a bit of rest before the evening's festivities.
  • Tonight, we'll head to Martyrs' square to join the massive crowd and take in the spectacle that will no doubt unfold. The celebration takes different forms each year, but in past years we've experienced musical performances, massive concerts, a military parade, a drone show, traditional costumes, and fantastic firework displays. The best part of Revolution Day, however, is the excitement in the air, with locals shouting and waving flags, and young people riding on top of cars cheering for the spirit of the revolution.
  • Overnight in Tripoli.

Day 3Thu Feb 18
Leptis Magna, Tripoli
  • Leptis Magna, Libya This morning we'll drive east to Leptis Magna, where we'll be able to say that we've visited all three cities of ancient Tripolitania (Sabratha, Oya (now Tripoli), and Leptis Magna). This massive UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most impressive ancient Roman cities you can visit in the world today. Not only is the site sprawling, but the temples, arches, baths, forum, theatre, and amphiteatre themselves are gargantuan. Nightlife in Tripoli, Libya Here we will walk down ancient colonnaded streets, see impressive arches, and learn about the uniqueness of this ancient marvel. And unlike most other sites of this scale, we'll almost certainly have the entire place to ourselves.
  • Following our visit, we'll head back to Tripoli where you can have a rest, or take a walk around the city to grab any last-minute souvenirs.
  • After our final dinner, we can head to a 100 year old café in Algeria square to drink almond tea and smoke shisha with the locals. It's a great place to people watch (though of course, we'll be the main people being watched!).
